James worked in a Coal Pit from age 11 in Westbury S about 1864, He lived in St Whites about 1866, later working as a Nurseryman. He married Sarah Goodman 17 April 1875 in Westbury S. They emigrated to New Zealand in 1877 on the Rangitiki, and after a small variety of work, James ended up as a Gardener at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens where he stayed for 37 years".
