Elaine (nee Wintle) daughter added (October 2026) : "...I am trying to find out if my father William Herbert Bill Wintle who lived at Old Street Farm Blakeney was in the 17th Batallion Home guard.
I remember as a child walking across the top fields when I was about 10 yrs of age asking my Dad about mounds of grass and bits of broken concrete.
All he told me is that they were look out posts in the war because we could see the River Severn and that was all he ever said.
Recently our grandaughters were doing a topic on world war two and our daughter asked for any photos.
There weren't any of either my mother or father and researching I found out it was against the rules for camera's to be used on farms.
Looking through my parents box the only thing I found was a badge which I learnt was from Lydney Grammar School which I know he attended.
Also I am wondering if my Uncle Samuel James Simpson (Jim) would have been one too.
I am just trying to find proof... "
